Here are few of the workshops that I routinely teach and are available to bring your location. There is one for everyone from beginners to experienced quilters.

Machine Piecing

Inspired by an antique treasure in her collection, Debbie has simplified the piecing techniques to create a beautiful quilt that works up quickly and beautifully. Using machine piecing and strip piecing techniques, grab some fat quarters [or a jelly roll or Bali Pops] and let’s get sewing. We will be making a 36” x 45” quilt in class; suitable for a wallhanging or crib quilt. This is destined to become a quilt you make over and over.

This original quilt design was inspired by and created following a trip to Italy. Build on your basic sewing skills, including strip piecing, color and value selection and placement, as you create a one-of-a kind spectacular quilt, using only squares and rectangles.

1 Day: All Levels from Confident Beginner
Hand Piecing

Learn the peaceful technique of hand-piecing while making a spectacular Sunflower block. Debbie shows you the basic technique and lots of tricks, including the easiest piecing sequence, clever continuous stitching and SIMPLE, PRECISE set-in seams. You will truly enjoy the portability and precision achieved by hand-piecing.

1 Day: All Levels
Hand Piecing

Create a masterpiece using shapes other than squares, triangles, or strips and be absolutely precise without stress! Learn the time-tested technique of English Paper Piecing and begin a treasured quilt. Debbie will share examples of the different shapes that are appropriate for this technique, historical notes and both modern and antique examples. Discover how to select and cut fabrics and create different illusions with your fabric choices.

1 Day: All Levels from Confident Beginner
Machine Piecing

Using a familiar block, Bear’s Paw, as a base, create a wonderful wall quilt and have a secondary design of Pine Trees emerge with a simple addition of color. You will learn speed techniques, tips and tricks for cutting and precision piecing, and many other ideas to use with all of your quilting projects.

 

corn-beansCorn & Beans: A Patchwork Potluck
1 Day: All Levels
Machine Piecing

It’s a Patchwork Potluck with a favorite block, Corn & Beans. Join in the fun by working with lots of different fabric squares from the purchased kit or bring your own fabric palette. Then, using Debbie’s Special Template, you’ll cut and piece your blocks. You will also get many tips, tricks and ideas on a variety of settings as your create blocks that will shimmer.
Options:
$10 Kit Fee [provides 24 squares 8”x 8”- enough for 12 blocks]
OR:
If your guild would prefer, this class can be done as an exchange with the students providing the fabrics, – whatever works best with your group. Doing the exchange would eliminate the kit and the kit fee.
OR:
Students can bring their own precut fabric and color palette.

Machine Piecing

The Bright Hopes block creates a dynamic woven design and is the perfect frame for novelty prints or beautiful florals. You’ll learn easy fussy-cutting-where you’ll discover how to isolate individual motifs from your fabrics, partial seaming and a terrific assembly method plus lots of other tricks and tips from this experienced teacher.

3 Days: All Levels
Machine Piecing and Hand Piecing

Take a step back in time and begin a sampler quilt like those made in the past. The quilt features blocks of many different sizes and made using many techniques. You’ll learn each blocks historical significance, machine piecing, grid triangles, flying geese, strip piecing, log cabin, set-in piecing, hand-piecing and more. Learn how to select and balance fabrics, decide on the layout and make the fill-in pieces, creating a completely unique and timeless sampler. The ease, flexibility and adaptability of this random setting will eliminate any problems that can arise when the actual finished blocks are a slightly different size than stated in pattern instructions. You will love the creativity and flexibility of this setting.

1 Day: All Levels
Machine Piecing

This wonderful Tabletopper is so much fun to make! You can use a controlled palette of color by using 2 fabrics for the stars, or you can ‘scrap-it-up’ like the sample. Using strip-piecing techniques, you will have this Tabletopper done in no time! You will also learn a terrific assembly method plus lots of other tricks and tips from Debbie to use in all of your quiltmaking.

The following 2 classes are Technique based, rather than Project-based. Each student learns several techniques and makes a Portfolio of Techniques for later reference.

It’s Not the “A” Word Anymore

Hand Applique

Frustrated by Needle-Turn Hand Applique? Too scared to try or to try again? Using a NEW TECHNIQUE, developed during her 43+ years of teaching, Debbie will teach you preparation, the applique stitch and everything you’ll need to know to create beautiful hand applique the very first time you try it! You’ll leave with a notebook filled examples of the most common shapes: straight edges, corners, valleys, points, stems, tiny stems, leaves, circles, points and reverse-applique. Come prepared to try something NEW!

Border Bonanza: No More Plain Borders
6 Hours Class Time: All Levels from Confident Beginner
Machine Piecing
$10 Kit Fee

Take your quilts from ordinary to extraordinary with the addition of a patchwork border that not only perfectly suits your quilt, but fits perfectly too! If you have ever wanted to add a patchwork border to your quilt, but you have hesitated, this is the class for you.

You will be working on kit fabrics, making several types of patchwork borders to keep in your notebook, creating you own portfolio of border ideas. Discussions of how to get each border to fit perfectly are also addressed.

During the second part of the session, if you have a quilt top without a border, bring it to class, along with the remaining fabric from the quilt top, and we will discuss many ideas about the border possibilities for your quilt top.

You will leave class with a portfolio of ideas and lots of tips and techniques including how to make perfect mitered corners!
